Journal Entry #6

Journalist Caught in Lies.

Janet Cooke and Jimmy's world, The Wafer Story reflection:

I don't really consider stories being fake unless they're very far fetched ans seem skeptical. I just take for granted that it is true.

I'm very surprised that professional journalist would lie about things just to have more credit. I can't believe they wouldn't think about the affects of what will happen when people find out they've lied. Its very selfish to do so.

I agree somewhat to Shafer's statement but i feel it's not lack of being able to write a story they probably just wanted more attention guided towards them. They wanted to be the first to write about something and gain respect for creating a newsworthy story.

I feel they should be tested to see if they can handle the stress and pressure that comes with the job of being a journalist. Students should go through some sort of test to prove they have what it takes to be a journalist.

I think a newspaper ombudsman should help with ethics. They're are there to look at readers complaints and work to fix them. I feel they will be able to fix problems that are brought up by others and address the problems.

Hard News Article

This Article is hard news because it can affect us in our daily lives. This is hard news rather than soft new because a lot of people most likely have mixed feelings on the subject of thousands of immigrants entering Canada annually.  Some might feel they use up Canadas resources and take jobs from us so that is why this is hard news.

This Article is soft news because it doesn't pertain to our everyday lives, its just a story that is guided more about entertaining people rather than it is about informing people on a serious situation. This story outlines dogs and humans and their bond for one another. The story is created to enlighten you on some facts on dogs. Thats why this story is soft news

This Article is Blurred news because it is a very interesting and intriguing discovery made on the great Pyramids. The Pyramids are ancient wonders of the world so new news on them is great. But this isn't hard news because it isn't effecting our everyday lives, yes its an important discovery but is isn't affecting us so it is blurred news. it can be taken to some people at hard news or soft news.

Journal Entry #4

Timing - 2/4
This is a news story that has been in the public view since October 13, 2017. It is the latest rescue mission to happen in which there are firefighters and civilians trying to get to there loved ones, and to try and save some of their personal belongings. I gave it a 4/4 on timing because it is an update on the California wildfires.

Significance - 3/4
I gave it a 3/4 on significance because of the number of people killed, and homes destroyed. At least 35 people have been killed and over 5000 homes and businesses have been destroyed. It has not only grabbed the attention of the people of California but also has been seen by many over the world.

Proximity - 3/4
The geographical proximity is not close to a Canadian reader, but Canadians can connect to this story as we have had our share of fires that have almost turned disastrous. It is a story that connects to Canadian history, and it is a story we hope has an ending that turns in a positive way.

Prominence - 4/4
The story has prominence because of the number of people killed and the unique rescue attempts that are being made. I gave it a lower mark because few know who these people are in the world. Even now their names were not mentioned anywhere.

Human Interest - 4/4
This story appeals greatly to emotion as people hope and pray that the fire outbreak calms down and no more deaths occur.

Final Newsworthy Mark - 16/20

Timing - 3/4
This news story happened on April 26, 2015.  On Saturday, a 33-year-old man died after falling five stories in a rappelling event in downtown Montreal. I gave it a 3/4 because this is an old article and this accident happened two years ago.

Significance - 2/4
I gave it a 2/4 on significance because this incident happened in Montreal. Montreal is very close to New Brunswick. It is about eight and a half hours from here.

Proximity - 2/4
This happened relativity close to New Brunswick, but I do not think the incident was big enough for people to know about it world wide, so that is why I gave it a 2/4 on proximity.

Prominence - 2/4
This story has prominence, but not enough to get a higher mark. why? because few people know about what happened and also that not a lot of people know who this guy was.

Human Interest - 4/4
This story appeals greatly to emotion as people hope and pray that nothing like this happens ever again and that people will always be safe when doing a rappelling event.

The Mafia and a Nigerian Gang are Targeting Refugees in Scily

What?/Where? They’ve fled violence, poverty, and terrorism – and made the often perilous journey across the Mediterranean from Africa and the Middle East. But for the more than 100,000 migrants who’ve arrived in Italy so far this year, the life that awaits them can be almost as dangerous as the one they left behind.

Why? It’s an attempt to deter other gangs from pursuing similar means of exploitation in the
country, while the Italian government continues to grapple with the influx of people to its shores.

This Article is effective i feel because it catches the attention of people by its vague Title.

The Story doesn't have much of an ending because its a very hard fact story it is mostly just facts and statements.

Quebec’s liquor board to control legal weed sale
why? Quebec follows the lead of Ontario and New Brunswick, which announced their initial plans for the sale and distribution of cannabis earlier this month
Who?/When? Quebec’s health minister is expected to introduce a proposed law on recreational cannabis in the coming months, ahead of the federal government’s deadline to allow sales by next summer.
What?/Where? Quebec plans to sell recreational cannabis through the province’s liquor board, and will set the minimum legal age to buy and consume it at 18 years old, according to news reports published on Friday.

This is an effective article. I feel it would catch the attention of a lot of people that use weed. If people can buy weed legally it will put a stop to black market sales.

A quote from the article: New Brunswick’s finance minister Cathy Rogers announced last week that "a new crown corporation would oversee legal weed sales, in partnership with two large cannabis companies that are licensed by Health Canada".

The interesting news is told first. It is that Quebec will sell weed legally store front by next summer.

The story didn't have a good ending the story is mostly just facts not much like a story it ends very abruptly.

Journal Entry #1

New papers back in the day were very different but they also have a lot of similarities. first of all the way 'Publick' is spelled.also there aren't any pictures or bold headings. The pages look very similar to the ones we look at and read about now.

personally I don't feel the government should have this much control over the news. The news to me is suppose to be important. Sometimes the government doesn't always want us to see the truth they keep us in the dark on many important meetings and business.

I feel its critical for the government because we  should know whats going on in our country. Nobody wants to hear there favourite franchise has a fault or is getting shut down. or how someone higher up did something stupid and wrong. People want to see things for how bad they are but people should really be looking at the bright side of things and not look for gossip all the time . I believe that the people who buy and support the newspapers help from getting the paper shut down. They provide the local news papers with enough earnings to keep them a float. people need to see the truth and whats important.

I was surprised the first newspaper was published in Halifax. I didn't know that Halifax was that popular. I figured the first news paper would come out of P.E.I because it was where confederation was set.
